Violence and hatred against LGBTQIA+ individuals are also drastically on the rise in Western Europe. The 90-minute documentary Hass gegen Queer / Queer Lives under Attack  follows those affected by such violence and sheds light on the societal climate that fuels it. How deeply rooted are discriminatory ways of thinking and acting within our structures? Where do the connections to racism and sexism become visible? And to what extent does this development serve as an indicator of the state of our democracy?

Hass gegen Queer / Queer Lives under Attack portrays individuals on their personal journeys of coping with what they’ve experienced, finding empowerment, and breaking the silence: Member of Parliament Tessa Ganserer, who is regularly subjected to transphobic media smear campaigns and online hate. Max from Bremen, who becomes the target of homophobic cyberbullying for eight months—until the threats spill over into real life. The German-French couple Charlotte and Linda, who are beaten in broad daylight in front of their daughter. Arnaud, who is attacked on the streets of Paris by six teenagers. And Ria and Leo, who find a sense of home in Berlin’s ballroom community, where queer and trans BIPoC have created a safe space for themselves. Because the threat becomes especially severe when different forms of discrimination intersect.

Interwoven with the stories of the main protagonists, many other queer individuals share their experiences of violence, making one thing clear: physical violence is only the tip of the iceberg.
